  • Report on Karnataka Rajyotsava Day

The words “Yelladaru iru…….yendendigu nee kannadavaaagiru” reverberated in the ears of a strong 250+ Kannadigas gathered at the Sri Meenakshi Temple Auditorium on Saturday the 5th of November at the Houston Kannada Vrinda’s annual Kannada Rajyotsava Day. The words mean wherever you are, be always what you are, a Kannadiga!!

As we have come to known in the last few years from Vrinda’s quality programs, this evening’s agenda promised another enriching Kannada experience with songs, dance and drama performed by the Sangha’s talented members. The cultural show, put together by the Secretary Vekatesh Gowda, began with a welcome address by President Sri Vatsa Kumar. The emcee for the evening was Suma Sridhar.

The cultural program kicked off with a devotional dance “Yamaneli Kaanenendu” by dancer Preethi Chandan. A lively folk dance “Chellidaru Malligeya” by Sreya, Neeraja and Spoorthi was followed. Nitya and Namya sisters melodiously rendered “Gandhavathi and Eee Pruthvi Namma Nela.” The 5-6 year old kids group comprising of Ankitha, Shriya, Siri, Tejasvi, Rishika, Gautham and Vishal, danced and sang the “Varada Hadugalu” under the direction of Suma Vishwanath. Suman Bharath presented a new age dance choreographed to the catchy number “Pata pata gali pata” and performed by Sammedh, Nikitha, Nakul, Nisha, Vikas & Ranjan.

A seasoned Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher, Indrani Parthasarathy, performed a classical dance for an Anthahpura geethe “Yeni mahanandave”. For the first time, the well known singer Neela Chakravarthy got together with Suma Munjunath to delight the audience with old Kannada movie favorites.

As a prelude to the upcoming Sangama Seminar, Yamuna Sinidhi presented a meaningful 30 minute production in the form of a colorful dance feature “Vijaya Nagara Vaibhava” which was definitely a highlight of the evening. It was performed by more than 40 Kannada Vrinda members of all ages. The grand sets and costumes were designed by Chaya Satish with the music and audio were skillfully edited by Srinidhi.

The evening ended on a happier note with a sumptuous dinner provided by Udupi Café.
